Omicron Surge Hits Major Moroccan Cities as Rabat and Casablanca See Spike in Cases

The cities of Rabat and Casablanca are strongly affected by the Omicron variant. The vast majority of tests carried out in these cities are positive for the new variant. The authorities fear a new epidemic relapse, calling for strengthening precautionary measures.

According to data from the Consortium of Laboratories revealed by the director of the Functional Genomics Platform at the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research (CNRST), El Mustapha El Fahim, 50 to 60% of Covid tests sent from Rabat and Casablanca to the Consortium of Laboratories concern Omicron variant infections, reports SRNT News.

However, this trend is not generalized throughout the kingdom, he stressed, specifying that a national collection of samples was underway to know and assess the general situation of the spread of this new variant at the national level.

For his part, the Minister of Health, Khalid Ait Taleb, issued an alert before the deputies, indicating that "the eventuality of an epidemic relapse in our country remains probable given the clear increase in the number of cases and new epidemiological outbreaks that have begun to appear, particularly in the family environment and in certain schools."

Consequently, "the precautionary measures must be strengthened by maintaining a high degree of surveillance and vigilance, by closely monitoring the epidemiological situation in Europe and in the world and by monitoring the results of viral sequencing carried out by the Moroccan Consortium of Laboratories," he added, calling on Moroccans to adhere "quickly and widely" to the national vaccination campaign, and to take the third booster dose.
