Olive Oil Production Waste Poses Environmental and Safety Hazards in Northern Morocco

The management of waste from the olive oil extraction process is a headache for the authorities in the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region, who are facing a real environmental problem and traffic accidents.
According to the daily Al Akhbar, olive oil waste is dumped in nature, polluting watercourses, groundwater and causing traffic accidents on regional and provincial roads in Larache, Ouazzane and Chefchaouen. This behavior, which undermines the efforts and heavy budgets invested in environmental protection, is a concern for the authorities at various levels.
Thus, to address this situation that has become a real health problem for both humans and livestock, strong decisions have been made and concern the implementation of a project led by the local authorities, the Ministry of Equipment and Water, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Sebou Hydraulic Basin Agency and the Loukkos Hydraulic Basin Agency.
This involves the allocation by "the current regional council of a budget of ten million dirhams for the construction of a unit for the treatment of olive oil waste, 3.6 million dirhams for the purchase of tanker trucks for the transport of waste and 8,000 dirhams for the land."
