Oil Spill Pollutes Popular Agadir Beach, Investigation Underway

Oil pollution is fouling the sea in Agadir. This huge hydrocarbon slick, discovered on Sunday, August 4, 2019, off the central part of the city’s beach, was noticed, as well as a fuel canister, by vacationers.
As soon as this pollution was discovered, an investigation was immediately opened to determine the circumstances of this situation. The research is being carried out by the Environmental Brigade of the Gendarmerie. For now, the source of this pollution has not yet been identified.
However, according to the Report of the Association, "Paysages", this pollution is caused by hydrocarbons detected, around 6 p.m., with a 20-liter canister, carried out to sea by the sea currents. This canister also contained oil for engine oil changes.
To deal with the most urgent situation, the joint commission dispatched to the scene demanded a sea cleaning operation, which was carried out. As for the vulnerability rate of the bathing waters, carried out by the Secretariat of State for Sustainable Development (SEDD), the degree of vulnerability was declared "high".
