Counterfeit Cash Washes Ashore Near Agadir, Morocco Prompting Police Investigation

On Saturday, July 27, 2019, the waters of the Aghroud beach, 30 km north of Agadir, washed up 3 handbags full of banknotes. Hundreds of 100 and 200 dirham bills scattered on the beach alerted the security services during a patrol around the beach.
The incident prompted the arrival of the city authorities, who requested the intervention of the Scientific Police elements. The Regional Commander of the Royal Gendarmerie, the auxiliary forces, as well as other security agencies were dispatched to the scene.
The initial analysis results revealed that these were counterfeit banknotes. The 3 handbags were deposited at the Agadir Gendarmerie Center, after fingerprints were taken. The security services combed the area in search of any suspects or other bags.
An investigation has been opened by the authorities, under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, to determine the circumstances of the case and to search for the persons involved in the counterfeiting of the banknotes.
