OCP Group to Double Fertilizer Supply for African Farmers Amid Food Security Concerns

In a context marked by the surge in food prices at the international level, the Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP) has decided to intensify its efforts to support African farmers. 4 million tons (Mt) of fertilizers will be dedicated to the continent in 2023, to strengthen its food security.
The announcement was made by Mostafa Terrab, CEO of the OCP Group, during the World Bank’s Annual Meetings, according to a press release from the company, specifying that this quantity represents more than double the supply dedicated by OCP to the continent in 2021 and more than a quarter of the total production planned by the Group.
The objective is to ensure that the right fertilizers are available across the continent, in order to boost yields for 44 million farmers in 35 countries, including Morocco, where the Group is based, the same source adds, noting that this investment includes a component of training local stakeholders.
As part of its long-term commitment to Africa, OCP through its subsidiary OCP Africa has developed a comprehensive farmer-centric approach that has already reached more than 2 million farmers, notably through fertilizer customization, soil mapping, training, field trials and market access, it is explained.
"The current geopolitical situation reveals deep systemic vulnerabilities in global agricultural systems. We must address the challenges facing African farmers, whether it’s infrastructure, training or access to markets and finance. We are pleased to be able to contribute," Terrab said.
