Obesity Rates Soar in Morocco: 1 in 4 Adults, 14% of Children Affected

Obesity is a health problem for many Moroccans. According to statistics, 25% of people aged 45 to 59 are obese and 14% of children are overweight.
The number of overweight people is constantly increasing in Morocco, according to Professor El Hassan Boukind. A specialist in aesthetic surgery, he insists that this situation carries many consequences for the health of Moroccans, reports the daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.
"These figures are worrying and it is time to sound the alarm on this scourge and to seriously think about developing the appropriate plans to treat it. Furthermore, more information needs to be provided to raise awareness about the serious consequences of overweight and malnutrition as well as its impact on public health," stresses Professor Boukind. He recommends prevention to avoid obesity, overweight and other related diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disorders and cancer.
El Hassan Boukind specifies "that we should not wait to reach 100 kilograms before deciding to treat the overweight problem. We need to act as soon as we notice that we are starting to gain weight to think about the appropriate solutions. We must know that the dangers of overweight concern not only aesthetics, nor the external appearance".
A person is considered overweight when their body mass index (BMI) equals or exceeds 30, the professor said. "That being said, there are several ways to fight obesity, starting with daily behavior to ultimately reach surgery," the professor of aesthetic surgery concludes.
