Tourist Slump Hits Northern Morocco’s Summer Season, Officials Seek Answers

In Morocco, there is a kind of malaise this summer in the tourism industry. The northern cities, especially Tangier and Martil, are experiencing a drop in tourist attendance. Concerned, the deputy Salwa El Bardaï, from the Justice and Development parliamentary group, has addressed a written question to Fatima-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy.
In her question, the elected official asks the minister to reveal the reasons for this tourist stagnation in the northern cities and coasts during the current summer season. According to Salwa El Bardaï, this tourist stagnation is the inevitable result of the decrease in the influx of thousands of Moroccan and foreign vacationers coming to spend their summer holidays and boost development and the economy in the cities of Tangier, Martil, M’diq, Al Hoceïma, among others, which had been accustomed for decades to welcoming tourists from the beginning of the summer season, reaching their tourist peak at the beginning of July each year.
After making these observations, the PJD deputy questioned Fatima Zahra Ammor about the measures her department will take to provide programs that encourage domestic tourism in the face of what she described as "anarchy" and a continuous deterioration of tourist services, but also about the factors governing the lack of an integrated vision of the tourism sector combining cultural and civilizational heritage and tourism promotion, in order to attract all those who wish to benefit from tourism in the country.
