The Nigerian oil company’s annual accounts shed new light on its financial commitment to the project. According to Punch, the loan was granted to NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company, its wholly owned subsidiary, to meet the needs of several infrastructure projects.

Three projects share the funds: cash calls for the Nigeria–Morocco gas pipeline, financing for the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline, known as AKK, and a capital contribution to Anoh Gas Processing Company. The amount allocated to each is not specified in the information reported by the daily.

As of December 31, 2025, 14.4 billion naira remained available under the loan and had not been drawn down. The accounts also list 25.7 billion naira in interest still owed. These figures relate to the total financing granted to the subsidiary.

A gas corridor to Morocco and Europe

The Nigeria–Morocco project has a different goal from the domestic AKK pipeline. The latter is intended to supply northern Nigeria, including its power plants and industries. The Atlantic corridor, by contrast, is set to serve West African coastal countries through to the kingdom, with a route onward to Europe.

Preparations passed a legal milestone on July 19 in Freetown. ECOWAS member states signed the intergovernmental agreement on the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline, according to ONHYM, which is advancing the project with NNPC.

This coordination is intended to support the infrastructure’s gradual development. The plan presented by Amina Benkhadra envisages sections that can operate independently, with initial links between Morocco and the gas resources of Mauritania and Senegal. A joint Moroccan-Nigerian company is to oversee implementation, financing and construction.

On the Moroccan side, efforts to find financial partners have also led Rabat to hold discussions with the US Exim Bank and the World Bank. Morocco’s ambassador to the United States, Youssef Amrani, confirmed the efforts in July. The Exim Bank acknowledged at the time that preliminary discussions had taken place.

The overall investment is estimated at around 26 billion dollars. The planned route is expected to run for about 6,800 kilometers along the Atlantic coast before connecting in Morocco to the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline, which links to Spain.
