NATO Naval Exercise 'SeaGuardian' Begins in Mediterranean, Morocco Hosts Patrol Vessels

As part of the annual NATO naval exercises, three patrol boats docked on Wednesday at the port of Tangier. Dubbed SeaGuardian, this naval exercise planned in the western Mediterranean brings together several countries, including Israel, which had initially declined NATO’s invitation.

According to Far-Maroc, the Portuguese offshore patrol vessel NRP Viana do Castelo (P360), the Spanish ESPS Audaz (P45) and the Royal Navy HMS Trent (P224) are the three patrol boats that docked at the port of Tangier. And that’s not all. "Maritime patrol aircraft and airborne early warning aircraft from Spain, Italy and Portugal will provide air support" to this exercise in which the Royal Moroccan Navy (MRN), the navies of other MENA countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait and... Israel, will participate.

"Morocco has already participated several times as an observer in NATO naval exercises, whether in the Atlantic Ocean or in the Mediterranean Sea. The Kingdom has always participated in these events and has sent several ships and boats to participate and cooperate with other countries during the many bilateral exercises. In any case, the high level of the Moroccan navy has been highlighted, which is distinguished by its modern armament, as well as by its preparation to face any problem that may arise," notes Atalayar.

According to the Israeli channel Channel 12, during these naval maneuvers, there will be "self-defense, following the events of the Russian invasion of Ukraine." Another training exercise, the same source adds, will be "Noble Dina," which is a series of exercises during which the navies will train for possible anti-terrorist scenarios and other types of exercises, such as protecting ports against damage or evacuating them in case of attack.

It is also planned during these exercises, training in search and rescue of civilians and military personnel, as well as a simulation of a naval battle.
