In Nador, a "thriving market" becomes a haven for drug addicts and the homeless

Inaugurated with great fanfare in 2014, the municipal market of the "Commercial Complex" in Nador was supposed to boost the local economy. Twelve years later, the second phase of this project, which swallowed more than 50 million dirhams in investment, has become an unsanitary squat.
Waste, drug addicts and the homeless occupy the premises, transforming what was supposed to be a commercial showcase into a real nightmare for residents and merchants.
The story of this market begins in 2002, recalls Achkayen, with the launch of the first construction phase by the urban municipality of Nador. The second phase, completed in 2014, includes 150 shops spread over two levels. Merchants and professionals have put their hands in their pockets to finance this ambitious project. But the authorities’ promises have remained a dead letter.
The lack of maintenance and security has transformed the market into a haven for marginalized people. At night, the corridors turn into open-air toilets, and drug addicts gather there to consume with impunity. Residents complain about noise and odor nuisances, and fear for their health.
