MRE Summer Boom: Nador and Saïdia Economy Thrives

In the Oriental, summer takes on a new dimension with the arrival of Moroccans residing abroad. In Nador, Saïdia and several cities in the region, the tourist season is driven by families coming from Europe to spend their holidays in Morocco.

The Marhaba 2026 effect is already visible in the ports, on the roads, in the cafés and on the beaches. Initial data from the operation reports more than 154,000 passengers and more than 41,000 vehicles crossing the Mediterranean during the first two weeks, with a slight increase compared to the same period last year.

According to Al3omk, the Almeria-Nador maritime line is among the most active at the start of the season, a sign of Nador’s growing importance as an entry point for MREs, particularly those coming from France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain.

This momentum continues throughout the region. Saïdia, with its beaches and its image as a major summer destination on the Mediterranean coast, attracts a significant portion of families. Nador also benefits from this presence, between family reunions, outings, shopping and trips to coastal areas.

Cafés, restaurants and hotels are cashing in

For local professionals, the return of MREs represents a key moment of the year. Restaurants, cafés, shops, hotels, transport services and leisure activities are recording a gradual increase in attendance since the start of the season.

The presence of MREs is not limited to vacations. It also sustains the local economy for several weeks, with stronger demand in accommodation, dining, markets, beach resorts and everyday services.

The atmosphere is also fueled by family reunions. For many Moroccans from Europe, summer remains the ideal time to see loved ones, enjoy the beaches of the Oriental and rediscover the country’s habits after several months away.

But this influx also comes with expectations. Voices are calling for further improvements in reception, simplification of crossing procedures and avoiding unjustified price increases in shops, restaurants, cafés or hotels.
