MRE: New ships arriving on the Spain-Morocco line
The shipping company GNV, a subsidiary of the MSC group, announced at the FITUR 2026 trade fair its intention to deploy new ships on the routes between Spain and Morocco starting next summer. This investment is part of a modernization plan aimed at increasing transport capacity and reducing the environmental footprint of crossings in the western Mediterranean.
The CEO of GNV, Matteo Catani, specified that the company is currently collaborating with the port and diplomatic authorities of the two countries to adapt the necessary infrastructure. These exchanges are particularly targeting the port of Tanger Med, where technical adjustments are underway to allow the regular operation of these new generation units.
According to the company’s management, this fleet renewal should make it possible to establish a more efficient maritime corridor for passengers, particularly Moroccans residing abroad, as well as for the flow of goods. GNV, founded in 1992, currently operates 26 ships on 33 international routes connecting eight countries, including Italy, France, Tunisia and Algeria.
The project also plans to strengthen the direct connections between Tanger, Barcelona and Genoa, in order to consolidate the integrated transport network between North Africa and Southern Europe. The operator emphasizes that this strategy responds to the energy transition objectives shared by the Spanish and Moroccan institutions.
