Morocco's World Cup Qualifier Prep in Jeopardy as Border Closures Affect Atlas Lions

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) is facing other difficulties, as the Moroccan airspace is closed until June 10 to certain European countries where many Moroccan internationals expected at the preparation camp are based. These include France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands or Germany.

According to the daily Al Ahdath al Maghribia, the players are summoned for a preparation camp starting May 31. But with the restrictive measures that have led to the suspension of air links, the national coach may have to be content with local players, as was the case during the last training camp of the Atlas Lions. The FRMF could gather the players in France and Spain before bringing them back to Morocco.

As part of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, Vahid Halilhodzic’s protégés will face Ghana on June 8 and Burkina Faso on June 12. These two matches will take place at the Moulay Abdellah complex in Rabat (8pm). It should be recalled that in consultation with FIFA, CAF has decided to postpone the African qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar 2022, which were to be played in June 2021.

The persistence of the coronavirus pandemic is not the only reason. The poor condition of the stadiums in 22 African countries has also been cited as one of the reasons that led CAF to reschedule the qualifiers for the competition.
