Morocco's World Cup Jersey Design Sparks Controversy Among Fans

Puma is under fire for the presentation of the jersey that the Atlas Lions will wear at the next World Cup, which will take place from November 20 to December 18, 2022 in Qatar.

The jersey of the Moroccan national team is white with red and green trimmings on the collars and sleeves. The Puma logo, the crest of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) and the player’s number are aligned vertically in the center on a darker background. The whole is surrounded by a circular pattern. This design is far from pleasing to some supporters. The German company is accused of having used a similar strategy for the third kits of the big European football clubs last summer. Atlas Lions fans believe the design is too homogeneous and strangely resembles that of teams like Manchester City, Marseille and AC Milan.

Similarly, Morocco’s away kit has exactly the same model as those of other African teams like Senegal and Ghana. The only difference is the colors and the style of the "halo" surrounding the player’s number on the front of the jersey. On the social network Reddit, many Moroccan supporters, like ESPN, have stated that the kit is too generic. According to them, it is possible to use typical Moroccan designs to produce a unique and eye-catching football kit for the Atlas Lions, as is the case with Hassania Union Sport Agadir, the professional football club, whose new jersey design features several Moroccan elements, including the old Tifinagh script that highlights the Amazigh roots of the city. They call on Puma to be inspired by it.
