Morocco’s World Cup Dreams Shattered: Atlas Lions Eliminated in AFCON Quarter-Finals

In Morocco, the elimination of the Atlas Lions from the Africa Cup of Nations against the Pharaohs of Egypt (1-2) in the quarter-finals was very poorly received. Between disappointment, frustration and sadness, the feelings were mixed.
"We are used to frustrations," said a Moroccan supporter who was following the match in a cafe in Rabat, to EFE. Once again, Morocco was unable to get past the quarter-final stage, a curse that has followed the Atlas Lions since the 2004 CAN.

The Moroccan supporters, dressed in national colors, were very enthusiastic at the beginning of the match and cheered the Moroccan goal scored on a penalty by Sofiane Boufal. But the euphoria quickly gave way to disillusionment after Egypt equalized and sealed the deal with a second goal scored during extra time.

"Our players are tired and psychologically destabilized with the draw and Salah’s play," explained a supporter, his eyes glued to one of the cafe’s screens. The disappointment was written on the faces of the Moroccan fans. The Atlas Lions unfortunately failed to win this match against Egypt, the country that has won the most African cups.
