Morocco’s Women’s Team Faces Germany in World Cup Debut, Vows to Compete

For their first participation and first World Cup match, the Lionesses of the Atlas will face, on Monday, July 24 at the AAMI Park in Melbourne, Germany, double world champions. Reynald Pedros, their coach, assures that his protégées "are ready to fight".
"They all know they are here at the World Cup. [...] The players all know it’s their first game and they’re beginners. But the message for them is that it’s something extremely positive, which will allow us to gain a lot of experience," Reynald Pedros told the English press through an interpreter. This is enough to boost the morale of his protégées who display their determination to go far in the competition.

"We are not here to make up the numbers, but to participate in the competition," assures captain Ghizlane Chebbak. The Lioness of the Atlas, Nouhaila Benzina, will be the first player to wear a hijab at the 2023 World Cup. Morocco is the first Arab nation to qualify for the Women’s World Cup. "We are honored to be the first Arab country to participate in the Women’s World Cup. We believe that we must assume a great responsibility to give a good image and show the progress made by the Moroccan football team by qualifying for the World Cup," adds Chebbak, hoping that the first match against Germany "will pave the way for other meetings."
After Germany, the Moroccan team will face South Korea. Finally, for the last match of group H, they will meet Colombia.
