Morocco without the 40-degree heat: why October changes everything for travelers
The sun remains generous, but temperatures gradually become more bearable. Between October and November, Morocco offers a particularly favorable combination for exploring the medinas, heading to the desert or enjoying the Atlantic coast.
The transition does not happen all at once. In Marrakech, the Met Office is still forecasting 39 °C this Sunday. Seasonal averages do, however, fall sharply from October, with temperatures generally ranging between 17 and 28 °C and around eight hours of sunshine per day.

This change transforms the conditions for visiting the city. Long walks through the medina, trips to the Atlas and days spent outdoors become more pleasant than in July or August, when temperatures can remain above 40 °C for extended periods.
The benefits extend well beyond Marrakech. Autumn makes it possible to combine imperial cities, desert regions and the coast in a single trip. Merzouga, Zagora and Ouarzazate become easier to explore during the day, while Fès returns to temperatures better suited to sightseeing on foot.
One season for the medina, the desert and the Atlantic
On the coast, Essaouira’s average high in October remains close to 25 °C. Less wind than in summer and fewer visitors make the medina, beaches and outdoor activities more accessible, notes The Times. In Taghazout, October also marks the return of conditions sought by surfers as Atlantic swells arrive.
This diversity is the main advantage of autumn in Morocco. In just a few days, a trip can take in Marrakech’s terraces, nights in the desert and the Atlantic coast without encountering summer extremes everywhere or winter chill.
The season now attracts enough travelers that it no longer consistently counts as low season. October is among the most popular months in Marrakech, precisely because it combines sunshine, moderate warmth and outdoor activities.

In November, daytime temperatures in Marrakech generally range between 20 and 24 °C, but nights can fall to around 10 to 12 °C. Travelers should therefore pack light clothing for the day and a jacket for the evenings.
