Morocco’s Watermelon Exports Surge as Spain’s Market Share Declines in EU

While Morocco’s watermelon exports to the EU have doubled over the past five years, Spain’s have fallen by nearly 20%. At the start of the watermelon season, Spanish producers fear Moroccan competition again.
From 2012, the year the agreement between the EU and Morocco was ratified, until 2022, Moroccan fruit and vegetable exports to Spain have quadrupled. On the European market, Morocco has doubled its watermelon exports over the past five years. Meanwhile, Spanish watermelon sales have fallen by about 20%, reports HuffPost.
Despite this significant decline, Spain was the leading supplier of watermelons to the EU in 2023 with more than 560,000 tons, followed by Morocco with 223,000 tons, Italy with 240,000 tons and Greece with 123,000 tons, according to Eurostat data. Over the past decade, Spanish exports have gone from 435 to over 125,000 tons.
