Morocco’s Watermelon Exports Surge 295%, Quality Improves

Moroccan watermelons are a hit abroad. Last year, exports increased by nearly 300%, after an already very good year in 2017.
Cited by the newspaper Le Matin, the figures from the United Nations Statistics Division (Comtrade) show an increase of 295.02% in 2018. They reached "156.19 million kilos, for a total value of 107.56 million euros". This strong growth is also accompanied by an improvement in the quality of the Moroccan product since per kilo, the figures show an increase of 38%, from 0.5 euros to 0.69 euros, while the average price is only 0.41.
Thanks to these figures, Morocco can boast of being the third largest exporter of watermelon in the world, behind the eternal rival Spain, or Mexico, which exports a good part of this product to the United States and Canada.
Still according to these figures, we note that the main customers are Spain which imported 72.27 million kg, followed by France (40.8 million), the Netherlands (15.12 million kg), the United Kingdom (11.89 million kg) and Portugal (4.09 million kg), according to the same source.
