Morocco Wastes 3.3 Million Tons of Food Annually, UN Report Finds

Despite the many awareness campaigns against food waste, about 3.3 million tons of food are thrown away each year in Morocco. In the rest of the world, estimates reach 931 million tons of wasted food.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) indicated that the amount of food wasted amounts to 91 kg per capita per year in Morocco. According to the UNEP Food Waste Index, 8 to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions are associated with food that is not consumed. Of the 931 million tons of food that is wasted, 61% comes from households, 26% from restaurants and 13% from retail.

UNEP insists that reducing food waste could bring many benefits, both for people and the planet. One of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals is to halve per capita global food waste at the consumer and retail levels by 2030.
