Morocco Ranks Third Globally in Mandarin Exports, Shipping Over 500,000 Tons Annually

With an annual average of 508,000 tons of mandarins exported between 2015 and 2020 and in view of the forecast data for the year 2021, Morocco is ranked 3rd largest exporter of this fruit in the world. This is a ranking by the Citrus Growers Association of Southern Africa (CGA).

According to this ranking, Morocco, 3rd in world mandarin exports, comes just after Turkey which occupies the first position with an average of 759,000 tons and China, 2nd, with 644,000 tons. South Africa is 4th with 294,000 tons. With its exports reaching 228,000 tons, the European Union is ranked 5th, followed by Israel, 6th, (98,000 tons). The 69,000 tons exported by Australia place this country in 7th place, reports Fruitnews.

While Morocco has risen to 3rd place in world exports of this citrus fruit, in terms of production, the kingdom ranks 4th with 1.172 million tons. With an average annual harvest of 21.687 million tons of fruit, China is the leader, followed by the EU, (3.1 million tons), Turkey, 3rd, with 1.45 million tons. In this table, the United States is ranked 5th, with 875,000 tons, Japan, 6th, with 873,000 tons, South Korea, 7th, with 620,000 tons. South Africa is 8th (370,000 tons), Argentina, 9th, (353,000 tons) and Australia which, with its 340,000 tons, completes the top 10 of the main mandarin producing countries.

Morocco, the same source points out, exports 43% of its mandarin production, Turkey 52%, and South Africa, 79%. For its part, China exports only 3% of its production, the rest is consumed by the domestic market. Europe provides 7% of the mandarins grown to foreign markets and Australia sells 20% of its production abroad. Turkey ships 52%, and South Africa, 79%.
