Global Olive Oil Consumption Dips, but Morocco Bucks Trend with 4 Liters Per Capita

The International Olive Council (IOC) forecasts a 1.5% decline in global olive oil consumption during the 2020-2021 season compared to the 2019-2020 campaign, to settle at less than 3.2 million tons. In Morocco, olive oil consumption maintains a positive trend as it is already the second most consumed oil by Moroccans.
The IOC stated that global olive oil consumption would have reached 3.2 million tons during the 2019/2020 campaign, an increase of 5.8%, according to provisional data. It would be 2.204 million tons in the member countries of this structure, an increase of 3.4% compared to the previous season.
Morocco and Albania, members of the IOC, stood out in 2019, with values higher than 4 liters of olive oil consumption per capita per year. Per capita and per year consumption for all member countries is 2.2 liters. In the rest of the non-IOC countries, consumption would be around 1.030 million tons, an increase of 11.4%.
Among the European IOC member countries, France, Italy, Cyprus and Portugal recorded a consumption of more than 5 liters per capita per year. Olive oil consumption in the European Union is 2.9 liters per capita per year.
