Morocco Wastes 30 Million Bread Loaves Daily, Costing Economy Millions

Abdennour Hasnaoui, executive director of the Federation of Moroccan Associations of Modern and Traditional Bakeries and Pastries (FAMBPMT), says that 30 million loaves of bread are wasted per day.
These breads are thrown in the trash or become animal feed, he confides to Hespress. "If we consider that the price of bread is only one dirham, then it is about 30 million dirhams that are wasted every day, thus reaching 900 million dirhams per month that the kingdom would not benefit from. This is a huge loss, especially since Morocco’s wheat imports are made in hard currency," says Mr. Hasnaoui.
Faced with the situation, he said that the federation has conducted a study with its regional branches. Moreover, it is devoting itself to the development of a concept and the development of a strategy in the form of a project to rehabilitate and develop the sector on a solid basis despite the circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic. The objective is to restore respect for the sector and to fight against the problems that hinder its development and prosperity.
In addition, "the federation has broken with the old discourse and has adopted a new, open and bold discourse within the framework of a participatory approach with the other stakeholders in order to relaunch the sector," assures the president.
