Morocco wants to help young people get married, but without giving them money

The Minister of Solidarity, Social Inclusion and Family, Naïma Ben Yahia, was responding to a written question from parliamentary adviser Khalid Satti, representing the National Labour Union in Morocco.

He proposed creating a national program granting future newlyweds loans on preferential terms, as well as financial and social incentives. He also invited the government to examine foreign initiatives established to encourage marriage and birth rates.

In her response, Naïma Ben Yahia said that such a system could not be decided in isolation. It would require a comprehensive government approach taking into account its social, economic, financial and demographic dimensions.

Services rather than financial aid

The ministry is advocating another approach, focused on preparation for married life. Its family policy provides for programs devoted to communication within couples, managing shared life and sharing family responsibilities.

It also includes the development of family mediation, parental support and spaces intended for families.

Naïma Ben Yahia is also relying on the national care economy strategy. This is intended to strengthen services dedicated to early childhood and local support services, in order to reduce the burden on parents and facilitate the reconciliation of professional and family life.
