Morocco Unveils Plan to Boost Marriage Rates Amid Demographic Shift

The Moroccan Ministry of Solidarity and Family is preparing a support program specifically designed for future newlyweds, as announced by Minister Naïma Ibn Yahya. This government initiative aims to provide a concrete response to the country’s demographic changes as well as the social challenges that directly affect family structure.
Presenting her ministry’s work to the Social Sectors Commission in the House of Representatives, Ms. Ibn Yahya explicitly linked this project to the results of the 2024 general census. This data highlights a notable transformation in Morocco’s age pyramid: an increasing proportion of elderly people on one side, and a decrease in the number of young people on the other.
Beyond these demographic indicators, the minister also emphasized the growing pressures on the family institution. She specifically cited domestic violence, rising divorce rates, and the reduction in household size as major issues. Believing that the legislative framework alone is not sufficient to effectively stem these problems, Naïma Ibn Yahya insisted on the need to adopt a comprehensive and integrated family policy.
Furthermore, the minister highlighted the economic impact of these trends, explaining that the decline in birth rates combined with the increase in the number of dependent people will result in a heavier financial burden for families. Based on this analysis, she launched a call to "strengthen health coverage and pensions, and to encourage young people towards economic autonomy and marriage."
