Morocco Vows Crackdown on Illegal Fishing in Spanish Waters

Morocco will take all "legal measures" against any Moroccan fisherman who practices illegal fishing methods in Spanish waters, said Mustafa Baitas, the government spokesman, on Thursday.
"Morocco ensures that the provisions and agreements in force are respected and that all legal measures are applied against any Moroccan shipowner who commits an offense, both related to fishing areas and the use of certain illegal methods," Baitas said as he left the Cabinet meeting on Thursday.
The Moroccan government’s reaction follows the denunciation by the Spanish organization Carbopesca, which claims to have detected the presence of at least a dozen Moroccan fishing boats in the waters near Motril in the last 24 hours, stressing that they are using an illegal fishing technique known as "drift nets".
"Given the freedom with which Moroccan vessels continue to carry out fishing activities in Spanish waters," the organization is again calling for "measures against this illegality," specifying that it has already alerted the authorities several times about this illegal practice of drift nets carried out by the Moroccan fleet.
