Morocco's Vaccination Drive Boosts Economic Optimism, Study Finds

The vaccination strategy implemented by the Moroccan authorities to meet the challenge of herd immunity is reviving the hope of a new dynamic in the business climate in the kingdom. This is the conclusion of a study carried out by the Moroccan Center for Conjuncture (CMC).

This special publication of the CMC which focused on the theme: "economic recovery: Priorities and support measures" reveals that despite the many restrictive measures that have dealt hard blows to economic activity, "the sustained and exemplary pace has brought a breath of fresh air to the business climate".

According to the publication, the campaign as conducted by Morocco has restored confidence to economic operators who, certainly with caution, are approaching the 2021 turning point with determination and a touch of optimism in many sectors of activity.

In terms of economic prospects, the CMC notes that access to vaccines should instill confidence and the resumption of tourism activities and even services in general. Enough to provoke a significant rebound in Morocco’s economic performance, the study shows.

Regarding emergency support measures, the center notes that they do not have an impact on the investment dynamics at the level of SMEs-SMIs. However, these same measures have produced the expected results in terms of growth, employment and social progress.

"More than a year after the outbreak of the pandemic and after multiple efforts to mitigate its effects both economically and socially, the cycle of activity, although resilient, does not yet show signs of a sufficiently vigorous trend reversal," the report insists.

The current picture requires the consolidation of support programs for SMEs through facilitating access to financing but also improving the competitive environment.

This special issue also addressed other topics, such as: "sectors of the Moroccan economy: between collapses and resilience", "the national policy of the business environment: a repositioning at the international level" and "tourism: a sector in difficulty".
