Morocco Vacations: Summer Shaping Up to Be Chaotic in European Airports

Travelers departing from Schengen area countries, such as France or Spain, are facing waits reaching three hours at borders. The EES system requires biometric data registration for non-European passengers. These new procedures are significantly slowing down boarding, to the point of causing missed flights, as illustrated by the case of around a hundred customers recently stranded in Milan. Faced with this situation described as a disaster by Ryanair’s leader, the ACI is requesting permission to completely suspend EES registration when queues grow excessively long.

The European Commission, cited by The Guardian, is defending its system nonetheless. It claims that registration takes an average of 70 seconds per passenger, disputing the five minutes advanced by the ACI. Brussels is shifting blame to member states, arguing they are solely responsible for technical deployment and management of these digital borders.

Beyond administrative congestion, another danger looms over departing aircraft. The ACI is warning of an imminent risk of fuel shortage linked to the Strait of Hormuz blockade. With Europe heavily dependent on the Middle East for its kerosene imports, airlines could run out of fuel within weeks, worsening the summer crisis.
