Morocco Unveils 10 km Tichka Tunnel Route to Link Ouarzazate and Marrakech
The project to build a tunnel connecting Ouarzazate to Marrakech is progressing rapidly, according to the Minister of Equipment, Nizar Baraka. After the preliminary studies, which focused on two routes, the government has opted for a 10 km route via Ourika.
With a total cost of 10 billion dirhams, this route includes 80 km of roads leading to the tunnel as well as the construction of 10 bridges, the minister explained, questioned about the project in parliament.
This option is not only an alternative to the N9 national road, but it also reduces the journey between Ouarzazate and Marrakech by 80 minutes for light vehicles and up to 112 minutes for trucks, he specified.
As for the second route, it concerns the construction of the tunnel via the N9 national road, passing through Tichka over a length of more than 50 km, by developing 8.5 km of roads and building a bridge, for a total cost of 7 billion dirhams.
Provisions are being made to finalize the additional studies related to geophysical and geotechnical realizations, the cost of which is estimated at 30 million dirhams (MDH), the minister assured. This will be followed by the actual implementation of this "essential project for the entire region" within the framework of a public-private partnership.
