Morocco Unveils New Measures to Combat Rising Cost of Living Crisis

Faced with the social unrest caused by the high cost of living, the Moroccan government has reiterated its commitment to address the rise in prices.
The issue was at the heart of a meeting of the government majority held on Tuesday, during which Aziz Akhannouch affirmed that the government will keep its promises, by taking appropriate measures to alleviate the difficulties of Moroccans.
Explaining the rise in prices, the Head of Government stated that it is due to a situation linked to the Covid-19 pandemic which, unfortunately, is facing a rise in the price of a barrel of oil, a surge in the prices of certain basic products and especially one of the most severe droughts that Morocco has ever known.
In this context, Akhannouch has committed to ensuring the subsidization of essential products such as sugar, butane gas, soft wheat flour, water and electricity, and to address the difficulties encountered by transport professionals and work to create a balance in the wake of the repercussions of the rise in international fuel prices.
To this end, the Executive held a meeting on Wednesday with transport operators. The objective of this meeting was "to examine solutions that could enable us to overcome the oil price crisis in order to limit its impact on citizens," he specified.
