Morocco Unveils Ambitious 5G Rollout Plan Ahead of Major Sporting Events

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) has launched a tender for the allocation of fifth-generation (5G) mobile telephony licenses. Operators have been invited this Friday to submit their proposals for the establishment and operation of the future networks.
The specifications for this deployment set a commercial launch in November 2025, just before the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) organized by the kingdom. The population coverage objectives are set at 25% by the end of 2025 or 2026, and at 70% by 2030, the year when Morocco will co-host the Football World Cup.
On the industrial level, the operators Maroc Telecom and Inwi concluded an agreement in March for the creation of two joint ventures, FiberCo and TowerCo. An investment plan of 4.4 billion dirhams over three years is announced for these entities. The funds will be allocated to the deployment of fiber optics and the construction of 6,000 telecommunications antennas by 2033.
The implementation of 5G coverage will be done in stages. It will initially target the main urban areas, economic and industrial hubs, as well as innovation centers, before expanding to other territories. It is planned that the host cities of the mentioned sporting events will have full coverage by the 2030 deadline.
This 5G project is part of the national "Digital Morocco 2030" plan. The latter also includes the connection to fiber optics of around 6,300 public administrations by 2026 and 5.6 million households by 2030. In 2023, investments in the digital transformation of the telecommunications sector amounted to more than 8.4 billion dirhams.
