Morocco Unveils Ambitious Rail Expansion Plan, High-Speed Train to Reach Oujda

The National Railway Office (ONCF) has great ambitions for rail transport. This is evidenced by its rail plan unveiled by Mohamed Abdeljalil, Minister of Transport and Logistics.

The ONCF is thinking big. During the session of the House of Advisors on Tuesday, the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohamed Abdeljalil, presented the rail plan developed by the Office. It emerges from his explanations that this plan includes new high-speed rail lines extending over a distance of 1300 kilometers, as well as conventional rail lines over 3800 kilometers. According to him, this plan will connect 43 cities instead of 23 currently, and will offer rail services to 87% of the population instead of 51% today, at an estimated cost of more than 400 billion dirhams. This plan also includes the connection of 14 ports and 12 airports, as well as other projects. The minister specified that the high-speed network is divided into two axes: the Atlantic axis between Tangier and Agadir and the Maghreb axis between Casablanca and Oujda.

Abdeljalil also said that the ONCF is currently preparing the realization of the high-speed line between Kenitra and Marrakech over 400 km, and is working on the necessary studies for the construction of the high-speed line between Marrakech and Agadir with a length of 240 km. In the same dynamic, the Office has also studied the feasibility of the railway line between the cities of Agadir and Laâyoune, he added, specifying that this line aims to determine the route of the line and the financial cost that the project will require.
