Morocco’s Unemployment Rate Drops to 11.2%, Urban Areas See Biggest Decline

The number of unemployed in Morocco fell to 11.2% in the second quarter at the national level. A pace that is slowing compared to the first quarter of the year according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
In Morocco, the decline in unemployment continues and affects all population categories. In the second quarter of the year, the number of job seekers has thus declined very slightly, according to statistics published by the HCP.
More specifically, the unemployment rate in urban areas fell by 2.7 points to 15.73% and by 0.6 points to 4.2% in rural areas. In total, between the second quarter of this year and the same period last year, the number of unemployed has decreased by 218,000, from 1,605,000 to 1,387,000 unemployed, which corresponds to a decrease of 14%, resulting from a decrease of 182,000 unemployed in urban areas and 36,000 in rural areas.
Among the populations most affected by unemployment are women, graduates and young people aged 15 to 24, with 15.1%, 18% and 30.2% respectively. As for underemployment, its rate went from 9.2% to 8.5% at the national level, from 8.9% to 7.7% in urban areas and from 9.5% to 9.6% in rural areas.
