Morocco’s Unemployment Rate Drops to 9.8%, Creating 112,000 Jobs in 2018

Good news on the employment front in Morocco where unemployment has just fallen back below the 10% mark according to the latest figures just published by the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
Thus, the unemployment rate fell from 10.2% in 2017 to 9.8% in 2018, the HCP reports, according to which 112,000 jobs were created, including 91,000 in urban areas and 21,000 in rural areas, compared to around 86,000 the previous year.
A more in-depth analysis of these figures, however, shows a high unemployment rate in the cities at 14.2%, compared to only 3.5% in the countryside. Also according to these statistics, 65,000 jobs were created in the services sector, 19,000 in agriculture, 15,000 in construction and 13,000 in industry and crafts.
While there is an improvement for graduates (-0.8 points), women (-0.7 point), and young people under 24 (-0.5 point), on the other hand, university graduates have seen an increase of 0.6 point and young urban people aged 15 to 24 of 0.4 point.
