Morocco’s Unemployment Rate Could Soar to 15% in 2021, UN Report Warns

The coronavirus pandemic has not finished ravaging the world of employment in Morocco. A recent report by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) revealed that unemployment could reach 15% in Morocco in 2021.
A certain stability was hoped for in 2021 but this report on economic and social developments in the MENA region shatters all hope and announces an increase of 3.46% in the unemployment rate.
The report states that in 2020, the unemployment rate reached 11.78%, because the pandemic has severely disrupted businesses, leading to the closure of around 113,000 of them since March 15. 700,000 employees found themselves without work, overnight, either permanently or temporarily.
The report stresses that for this year 2021, the prospects for a recovery in growth remain insufficient to overcome the ravages of the recession due to Covid-19. Even the 4.8% growth recovery forecast by the Moroccan government will not be enough to cope with the impact of the economic recession, which is 7.2%.
