Morocco’s U20 Team Returns to AFCON After 20-Year Absence, Faces Gambia in Opener

After the African Nations Championship (CHAN), Morocco will participate, starting this Tuesday, February 16, in the U20 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Mauritania. A few hours before their first match, the young lions are present in Nouadhibou, the Mauritanian city closest to the Moroccan border.
After 20 years of absence, [Morocco] is renewing its relationship with the U20 AFCON. To approach this continental competition, which takes place from February 14 to March 6, calmly, the young lions of the Atlas have trained in the city of Laâyoune on the artificial turf of the Moulay Rachid stadium.
In the same city, Zakaria Aboub’s protégés will first face Gambia on February 16 before playing their second match against Ghana three days later on the pitch of the Nouadhibou stadium. The young Lions’ third match will take place in the Mauritanian capital.
Twelve teams are participating in this edition of the U20 AFCON, compared to 8 in previous editions. They are divided into three groups of four teams, with the first, second and two best third-placed teams advancing to the quarter-finals. As for the finalists, they will qualify for the U20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Indonesia in 2022. It will not take place due to Covid-19.
