Morocco U17 team collapses heavily (0-6) against Portugal
The Moroccan under-17 national team suffered a heavy defeat in their second match of the World Cup in Qatar. This rout against Portugal seriously complicates their chances of qualifying for the next round.
The Atlas Lions were defeated by a clear score of 6 goals to 0 against Portugal, this Thursday, November 6 in Doha. Already beaten by Japan (0-2) in their opening match, Nabil Baha’s protégés had nevertheless needed a positive result to hope to bounce back in group B.
The collapse was rapid in the first half. Portugal opened the scoring in the 20th minute, before doubling the lead two minutes later. The Moroccan team, overwhelmed, conceded a third goal in the 29th minute, then a fourth from the penalty spot in the 44th minute, bringing the score to 4-0 at half-time.
Morocco’s qualification now compromised
The second half confirmed Portugal’s superiority. José Neto scored a fifth goal as early as the 46th minute, before scoring a brace in the 60th minute to make it 6-0.
The Moroccan team was completely disoriented and lacking in coordination, and never seemed able to react or save face, despite the changes made by Nabil Baha.
This defeat places the Atlas Lions in an extremely delicate position. They will have to win, and by a large margin, in their last group match against New Caledonia this Sunday, November 9, and hope to finish among the eight best third-placed teams to reach the next round.
