Morocco Triples Avocado Exports to Europe, Gains Market Share

Although a newcomer in the highly competitive avocado sector, Morocco has managed to establish itself on the global market. Thanks to the quality of its production, the kingdom has tripled its exports to Europe.
Faced with the fruits of Latin American countries such as Chile, Mexico, Colombia and Peru, Moroccan avocado has managed to carve out a place for itself on the European market, which is increasingly fond of its avocados due to their quality, according to a recent press release from the Ministry of Agriculture. In this regard, the Moroccan area dedicated to avocado has increased by more than 150% compared to last year.
According to the same source, the quality of the fruit is comparable to that of Spanish production and Morocco finds more opportunities to export avocados to the European market. Despite the covid-19 pandemic, avocado exports reached a volume of around 32,800 tons as of May 9, practically triple the volume recorded during the previous season at the same date (11,200 tons).
Another advantage of Morocco, as a supplier for European customers (Netherlands, United Kingdom...) is its proximity (only four days of transit) and the high quality of its fruits.
In less than 10 years, Morocco’s export capacity has increased from less than 2,000 tons in 2010 to nearly 33,000 tons in 2019. Thanks to this performance, the kingdom has risen to the rank of third African exporter, behind Kenya and South Africa, which record nearly 50,000 and 40,000 tons respectively.
