Morocco Travel Currency Allowance Surges 177% in 2025

Moroccans are increasingly requesting additional foreign currency before traveling abroad. Applications processed by the dedicated service of the Office of Exchange increased from 1,733 in 2024 to 4,805 in 2025, according to the institution’s 2025 management report.

This 177% increase comes after several years of decline. The number of applications had fallen from 5,283 in 2021 to 4,050 in 2022, then to 3,147 in 2023. After dropping to 1,733 files in 2024, it is now approaching the level observed four years earlier, though without exceeding it.

These figures correspond to applications registered by the DTS digital service. They do not necessarily represent the number of authorizations ultimately granted or the amounts of currency actually obtained by travelers.

Income tax opens the door to the supplement

The procedure allows online requests for proof of income tax payment for the previous year. This document is essential to benefit from the supplementary portion of the allowance.

Since the new foreign exchange regulations came into effect in January 2026, the travel allowance for personal trips can reach a global ceiling of 500,000 dirhams per calendar year. It includes a basic allowance of 100,000 dirhams, accessible without income conditions, and a supplement of up to 400,000 dirhams.

This supplement is calculated at 30% of income tax paid the previous year. The 500,000 dirham ceiling is therefore not automatically granted to every traveler: the available amount depends on each person’s tax situation.

The report provides no precise explanation for the sharp increase in applications in 2025. However, it shows that the tax-related supplement, after a year of clear decline, is once again attracting several thousand Moroccan travelers.
