Morocco-EU Trade Plummets to 35 Billion Euros Amid COVID-19 Crisis

In 2020, due to the ongoing health crisis, trade in goods between Morocco and Europe reached 35 billion euros, down from the last three years. This is what the Delegation of the European Union in Rabat indicated.

The 35 billion euros recorded in 2020 consist of 15 billion euros in Moroccan exports to the EU and 20 billion euros in exports from the Union to Morocco, the EU Ambassador to Morocco, Claudia Wiedey, told the press. Trade between Morocco and the European Union represents about 60% of Morocco’s foreign trade, the document from the Delegation of the European Union pointed out, stressing that Morocco is the EU’s 1st partner in the southern Mediterranean.

Regarding agricultural trade between Morocco and the EU, it reached around 4.6 billion euros in 2020, or 13% of the total goods trade between the two parties. However, agricultural trade is increasing, despite the Covid-19 health crisis that has drowned total trade in 2020. Moreover, since the entry into force of the agricultural agreement in 2012, the Kingdom’s exports to the EU have doubled, reaching 2.5 billion euros in 2020, or 16% of Morocco’s total exports to the EU.

As for imports from the EU, they reached 2.2 billion euros, equivalent to 11% of Morocco’s total imports from the EU in 2012. Thus, Morocco has a trade surplus in agricultural trade with the EU. In addition, trade in processed agricultural products accounts for 9% of agricultural trade between the two parties, or 16% of imports from the EU and 3% of Moroccan exports to the EU.

It should be recalled that trade between Morocco and the EU takes place under a free trade regime, under the Euro-Mediterranean Agreement establishing an association between the EU and Morocco, followed by other agreements.
