Morocco on Track to Meet Ambitious Renewable Energy Goals by 2020

The objectives set by Morocco in terms of renewable energies should be met within the allotted time. This is what a study carried out by the Policy Center for the New South, entitled "Renewable Energies in Morocco: a model for Africa and emerging economies", indicates.
"Since 2009, on the initiative of King Mohammed VI, renewable energies have become a reign project, with the objective of representing 42% of the electricity produced, by 2020. To achieve this, three sectors will contribute equally at 14%: the hydroelectric sector, the wind sector and the solar sector," explains the author, Henri-Louis Védie. According to him, this objective should be achieved at the cost of considerable investments, favoring the latest generation technologies.
Beyond the statistical success, he points out, it is also the learning of know-how, particularly in the solar and wind sectors, that Morocco will be able to export. Similarly, it is a success that will give hope to emerging economies, devoid of fossil fuels, in search of development and sustainable development.
"In addition to its impact on employment, it is also an opportunity and a major interest for the southern provinces of the Kingdom, where nearly 60% of the country’s solar and wind electricity production capacity is concentrated, allowing them to reallocate a portion to the northern regions and, tomorrow, no doubt, to export to the European Union via Tangier," says Henri-Louis Védie. He will specify that the objective of the 3/14% by 2020 should be met.
