Morocco’s Tourist Transport Industry Struggles Amid Pandemic Slump

The health crisis related to the coronavirus pandemic has strongly impacted all the links in the tourism sector in Morocco. Tourist transport companies are facing a difficult situation, with losses ranging from a drop in turnover to the deterioration of many vehicles for long-term parking.
The hope generated by the partial reopening of borders and the arrival of some tourists seems to be fading. Tourists have become scarce, especially with the second wave of confinement weighing on some countries due to the discovery of a new variant of Covid-19. The tally of losses continues to mount, putting industry professionals in an even more delicate situation.
Even those who were betting on the launch of the anti-Covid vaccination campaign to regain some health in their business had to face reality. According to figures provided by the National Federation of Tourist Transport (FNTT), affiliated with the General Confederation of Enterprises of Morocco (CGEM), tourist transport companies, made up of more than 80% by very small, small and medium-sized enterprises (VSMEs), are in turmoil, reports the MAP.
Fortunately, an addendum has been adopted by the Economic Monitoring Committee (CVE), and aims to grant an allowance to employees with contracts concluded with tourist transport companies before February 2020. The allowance will cover the period from October 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021, and also includes provisions relating to the simplification of the conditions for resuming activity and operating tourist transport authorizations.
