Morocco Tourism Surges: Arrivals Exceed Pre-Pandemic Levels as Expats Return Home

Tourism activity has picked up again in Morocco. An accelerated pace that even suggests exceeding pre-pandemic performance this summer. As of the end of June, the number of arrivals is up 5%, or 1,140,000 tourists compared to 1,092,000 during the same period in 2019.
This growth is also up 235% compared to the first half of 2021, according to figures from the Ministry of Tourism, specifying that this improvement is partly driven by the massive arrival of Moroccans living abroad (MRE).
As of the end of June, 620,000 of them have returned to the country for their holidays, an increase of 27% compared to June 2019. These arrivals will peak during July and August 2022, the same source predicts.
This accelerated recovery is also made possible by the overall system put in place by all the players in the sector. The ministry cites, for example, the strengthening of air capacity, the various partnerships signed with tour operators to secure a significant number of arrivals, and the various measures taken to promote the attractiveness of the destination, such as the launch of the electronic visa starting July 10.
