Morocco’s Tourism Surge Falls Short for Hotel Industry, Post-COVID Recovery Incomplete

While many tourists have arrived in Morocco this summer, the hotel industry has benefited little from the tourism boom. The pre-Covid-19 crisis performance has not been reached.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, Morocco welcomed a total of 3.2 million tourists in June and July 2022, 65% of them in July with more than 2 million arrivals. "This is an exceptional performance that has allowed us to recover 100% of the arrivals in June and July 2019," it had announced in a press release. Overnight stays for the same period amount to 3.8 million, or 1.18 overnight stays per tourist on average (including Moroccans living abroad), reports the daily Les Inspirations Eco.
Compared to 2019 statistics, the hotel industry has not yet regained its pre-Covid-19 pandemic level. In total, 2,003,919 overnight stays were recorded in classified accommodation establishments (EHTC) in June 2019 for 1,092,430 arrivals at border posts, an average of 1.83 overnight stays per tourist, 2,505,290 overnight stays in the EHTC in July for 2,144,524 arrivals at the borders, an average of 1.16 overnight stays per tourist and 3,020,545 overnight stays in the EHTC in August for 1,722,081 arrivals at border posts, an average of 1.75 overnight stays per tourist.
