Morocco's Tourism Sector Rebounds as Domestic Travel Resumes, Awaits Diaspora Influx

Domestic tourism is gradually resuming in Morocco. With the easing of restrictive measures, Moroccans do not hesitate to take a few trips to the cities in the south of the kingdom, to the delight of tourism operators who are eagerly awaiting the arrival of MREs.

The hotels and inns of the cities of Agadir, Ouarzazate and Marrakech welcomed some domestic tourists in early June, awaiting the reopening of air borders to allow the arrival of foreign tourists. But already, tourism stakeholders are counting on the arrival of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) to relaunch their activities, reports Hespress. Tourism professionals in the cities of Tinghir, Ouarzazate, Midelt and Merzouga are also betting on the arrival from June 15 of the MREs to relaunch the sector, which has remained moribund since last year.

Several tourism stakeholders have expressed on social networks their fear of the 10-day quarantine imposed on MREs from Latin America and Asia, believing that this additional burden, which adds to the already high price of plane tickets, risks dampening the desire of the latter to return to Morocco.

Meanwhile, some tourism operators have welcomed the easing of restrictive measures, in particular the extension of the curfew until 11 p.m., the issuance of the vaccination pass to facilitate the movement of Moroccans, both within and outside the national territory.

Morocco has announced the resumption of flights to and from Morocco from June 15, in compliance with the current health protocol, in order to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
