Morocco’s Tourism Revenue Soars: French, American, and German Visitors Lead Growth

Tourism revenues have seen a marked increase between 2016 and 2018. French, German, American, Italian and Chinese tourists are the major contributors.
Morocco’s tourism revenues reached 73 billion DH in 2018, an increase of 13.7% or 8.8 billion DH compared to 2016, according to the Office des Changes. In 2017, the growth was stronger than in 2018.
Many foreign tourists have largely contributed to this improvement. In increasing order, these are mainly the French (+1.9 billion), the Germans and the Americans (+1 billion each), the Italians (+763 MDH) and the Chinese (+670 MDH). The revenues of the latter have increased, following the removal of visas for Chinese nationals in June 2016.
With this measure, the Chinese have overtaken the Spaniards (+580 MDH), thus becoming the second historical customer of Morocco in terms of weight (number of tourists and revenues). The Belgians (+415 MDH), the Poles (+415 MDH), the Dutch (+360 MDH) and the English (+292 MDH) occupy the last places in the ranking.
