Morocco's Tourism Outlook Brighter Despite Global Travel Slump, UNWTO Reports

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) announced on Thursday, May 7, that the number of tourists could decline by 60 to 80% in 2020 due to the covid-19 health crisis affecting almost all countries in the world. But the prospects are more positive for Morocco.

"This is by far the worst crisis that international tourism has faced since records began in 1950," the UNWTO said in a statement cited by Belga.

From January to the end of March 2020, the sector recorded an estimated loss of $80 billion. In total, financial losses could range from $910 billion to $1.2 trillion, the same source predicts.

The UNWTO expects "to see signs of recovery in the last quarter of 2020, but especially in 2021", with a faster recovery in domestic demand than in international demand, it adds.

According to the experts of this UN agency, based in Madrid, who foresee a recovery in the sector in 2020, the prospects are more positive for Africa and the Middle East. Conversely, they are more pessimistic for the Americas, with a perceived difficult recovery for 2020.
