Morocco’s Tourism Minister Admits High Prices Hurting Domestic Travelers

The Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, Fatima-Zahra Ammor, acknowledged: the prices of tourist services in Morocco are indeed too high, particularly during the high season. Facing deputies during an oral question session at the House of Representatives this week, she recognized this imbalance between supply and demand that penalizes Moroccans.
Tourist demand, particularly in some flagship destinations, largely exceeds the available supply, thus creating a context conducive to soaring prices. To remedy this structural problem, the Ministry of Tourism has committed, as part of its roadmap, to increase the accommodation capacity in order to absorb this gap and thus lower prices, she indicated.
Concretely, the actions taken by the ministry are articulated around several axes:
• Encourage investment in tourism infrastructure, particularly in areas with high potential such as seaside resorts and natural sites.
• Develop resorts adapted to the purchasing power and expectations of Moroccans, by offering varied formulas and attractive prices.
• Implement the new legislation on tourist establishments, which aims to "diversify the tourist offer with quality and at appropriate prices", by encouraging innovation in accommodation in particular.
Deputies did not fail to emphasize the importance of domestic tourism for the national economy, recalling the crucial role played by Moroccans in saving the sector during the Covid-19 crisis. They thus pleaded for a strengthening of national tourism infrastructure and better promotion of local tourism internationally.
In response, the minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to promoting domestic tourism, with a focus on specific themes such as beach and nature tourism. She also mentioned the implementation of programs such as "Ntla9aw Fbladna" and "Ntla9aw F Marrakech", the opening of new domestic air routes connecting 9 tourist destinations and the training of sector personnel.
