Morocco’s Tourism Industry Calls for Urgent Aid Amid Ongoing Crisis

Faced with the lack of concrete measures to save their sector, the National Confederation of Tourism (CNT) and the National Federation of the Hotel Industry (FNIH) are calling for an urgent meeting in Rabat, with the Economic Monitoring Committee (CVE). Objective: to find adequate solutions to an ongoing crisis to the great dismay of professionals.
These two main trade unions in the sector sent a letter to the CVE on Monday to call for an urgent meeting, reports Maroc Hebdo. "We have been discussing with the Ministry of Tourism for three months, without any results, fumes in anger an anonymous professional. Today, nearly 80% of hotels refuse to open their doors. There is no demand and some regions are still confined. We cannot continue like this, we have suffered these last three months and things seem to be getting worse without anyone lifting a finger to help us."
If several hotels refuse to resume their activities, it is because the costs related to the preparation for the resumption, in particular those related to the prevention and safety measures against covid-19, prove to be expensive, specifies the same source. It takes "between 300,000 and 500,000 dirhams per accommodation establishment, not to mention the costs related to the screening of employees," explains Lahcen Zelmat, president of the National Federation of the Hotel Industry (FNIH).
