Morocco Time Change: Ferry Paradox Between Tarifa and Tangier

Morocco will end permanent GMT+1 starting September 20, 2026 at 2 a.m. This decision, announced by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, reverses the choice adopted in 2018, which had set almost the entire year one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

This change will have a very concrete effect on crossings between Spain and Morocco. As Europa Sur points out, the gap will reach two hours in summer between the Spanish peninsula, which will remain at GMT+2, and Morocco, which will be at GMT.

On the Tarifa-Tangier line, the paradox will be visible. A passenger who boards in Tarifa at 10 a.m. could arrive in Tangier around 9 a.m., local time, after a crossing of approximately 45 to 60 minutes. The journey will have taken place, but the clock will give the impression of having gone backward.

In the other direction, the effect will be reversed. A departure from Tangier at 3 p.m. could result in an arrival in Tarifa around 6 p.m., taking into account the duration of the crossing and the time difference. For travelers, it will mainly be a matter of paying attention when reading tickets.

Watch out for local times

Maritime companies already use the local times of each port. The problem will therefore not come from the tickets themselves, but from connections with a bus, train, flight, or appointment scheduled just after arrival.

Vigilance will be particularly important during periods of high traffic, especially during major summer returns between Europe and Morocco. An error of one or two hours can be enough to miss a connection or to poorly organize a family arrival.

Mobile phones can also add to the confusion. In the Strait of Gibraltar, devices can switch from a Spanish network to a Moroccan network during the crossing. With the automatic time zone change, the displayed time can then shift mid-journey.

In winter, the gap will be less dramatic. When Spain returns to GMT+1, there will be only a one-hour difference with Morocco. But in summer, the ferry between Tarifa and Tangier will become one of the rare routes where you can change continents in less than an hour while feeling like you’re turning back time.
